At the age of twenty-two, Mozart nearly lost his fiancée Constanze Weber to illness. When she recovered, he vowed to write a Mass in thanks for her life. The "Great" Mass in C Minor was born. In a romantic twist, the recovered Constanze Weber performed the soprano solo part at its premiere in Salzburg. What's puzzling to this day, though, is exactly why Mozart left the mass unfinished.
This all-Mozart evening features the "Great" Mass in C Minor with its enormous scale and scope, Exsultante, jubilate ("Exult, rejoice") with its exuberant "Alleluia," and his beloved Ave verum corpus ("Hail, true body").
May Festival Music Director James Conlon conducts the May Festival Chorus, joined on stage by the world-class Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
