VERDI: OTELLO

May 21, 2016

Program and Description

JUST ANNOUNCED:
May Festival Otello Gregory Kunde is the International Opera Awards Male Singer of the Year.
May Festival Desdemona Tamara Wilson has won the 2016 Richard Tucker Award.

The role of Otello requires a tenor with such remarkable agility, stamina, and range that only a handful of artists worldwide can successfully take on the task.

Gregory Kunde, the International Opera Awards Male Singer of the Year, portrays the brave general Otello. He's joined by Cincinnati's own Tamara Wilson (Desdemona), breakout soprano star and winner of the 2016 Richard Tucker Award. A star-studded cast including Rodrick Dixon, the May Festival Chorus, and the world-class Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra combine for an Otello performance for the ages.

Shakespeare's Othello has been adapted into many art forms since its writing, perhaps none more brilliantly so than Verdi's setting. The Bard's story of pride, deceit, jealousy, and passion will be brought to life by singing of spectacular virtuosity and extraordinary beauty.
