2020 Festival Artistic Partner

John Adams

The musical innovator and creative thinker John Adams joins the May Festival as Artistic Partner for the 2020 season. Adams will conduct his El Niño, a sweeping Nativity oratorio written for vocal soloists, a trio of countertenors, a full orchestra, chorus and a youth chorus. We also present Adams’ theatrical song-play, I was looking at the ceiling and then I saw the sky, a story of the aftermath of a natural disaster and the people who experience it— moments which feel almost ripped from the headlines.

John Adams Conducts EL NIÑO
MAY 23, 2020

El Niño is a retelling of the Nativity story from unique perspectives. Drawing on poetry by Latin American women, Adams gives us a retelling of the birth of the child from a mother’s point of view.
