MAY FESTIVAL 2017
THE DREAM PROJECT
This forward-looking season brings together world-acclaimed guest artists and the Festival’s first-ever Creative Partner, Gerard McBurney, to curate the immersive Dream Project. The result is a joyful and imaginative celebration of shared music-making that builds on Cincinnati’s amazing singing tradition.
As part of a new artistic leadership model for the 2017 May Festival season, Creative Partner Gerard McBurney will infuse the two Dream Project performances with artistic innovation, creating new, memorable choral singing experiences for May Festival audiences.
Gerard McBurney comes to the May Festival after a 10-year tenure as Artistic Programming Advisor at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Creative Director of their Beyond the Score® series, which “weaves together theater, music and design to draw audiences into the concert hall and into a work’s spirit.”
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
SAT MAY 20, 2017 • 8 PM
Matthew Halls, conductor
The first installment of the Dream Project features Mendelssohn’s complete A Midsummer Night’s Dream as you've never seen it. A dramatic realization curated by Creative Partner Gerard McBurney complements Matthew Halls’ energetic interpretation. The world-class Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra joins the May Festival Chorus to perform Mendlessohn's thrilling score.
About A Midsummer Night's Dream:
Shakespeare's most popular comedy, Midsummer is a story of magic gone haywire, on-again-off-again weddings, and Cupid's clumsy arrow. Trouble begins when four young lovers become lost in an enchanted forest. A love quadrangle forms as the mischievous fairy Puck makes the wrong couples fall in love. Meanwhile, a group of rehearsing actors is caught in the crossfire in a wager between the King and Queen of the Fairies.
THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS
FRI MAY 26, 2017 • 8 PM
Michael Francis, conductor
The second Dream Project performance features Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius, regarded by many as his masterpiece. Creative Partner Gerard McBurney curates a concert experience inspired by Elgar's music and the John Henry Newman poem of the same name. Michael Francis, Music Director of The Florida Orchestra and the Mostly Mozart Festival in San Diego, leads the May Festival Chorus and the world-class Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
