Opening night is set for May 11 at Cincinnati’s Music Hall, and opens with an audience favorite that is an immense tour de force, Orff’s Carmina Burana. The May 12 concert features the work of two iconic French composers, Poulenc’s Gloria and Duruflé’s Requiem. The first weekend concludes on May 13 with sacred music in a sacred setting—the exquisite Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky. On May 18, one of the most celebrated works in the choral repertoire will be performed, Brahms’ A German Requiem. The 2012 May Festival concludes on May 19 with an all Tchaikovsky evening consisting of works that are all May Festival premieres. Guest artist information and further details can be found on the May Festival website.

May Festival to Participate in World Choir Games
The World Choir Games will take center stage in Greater Cincinnati from July 4 – 14, 2012. At a press conference on September 13, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and May Festival Chorus were designated as “The Host City Orchestra & Chorus of the 2012 World Choir Games” and will participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at US Bank Arena. “Cincinnati's May Festival, the oldest continuous choral festival in the Western Hemisphere, was among Cincinnati's selling points to Interkultur, the Germany-based company that owns and operates the World Choir Games,” said the Enquirer’s Laura Bishop. Where in the World is James Conlon?
James Conlon has been busy on the west coast this fall. As Music Director of the Los Angeles Opera he has opened two operas—Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutti, which run through early October. On September 18, a review in the LA Times said, “Ultimately, the evening’s splendor was to be found in the pit. The muscular, dug-in string sound may have been more American gung-ho than Russian uncertain, but the intensity worked. So did the colorfully tart winds and the overall sense of propulsion and bigness that Conlon conveyed throughout.”
James Conlon will also replace Fabio Luisi (as he heads to the Metropolitan Opera to fill in for James Levine) in performances of Verdi’s Requiem with the San Francisco Symphony from October 19-22. An interesting article about the Music Director Musical Chairs was recently in the New York Times.
